In less than two decades, home computer have become a necessary part of life for most people. In the twenty-first century, computer literacy is as important as reading itself. We all remember as reading itself. We all remember how daunting the computer seemed, the first time we clicked a mouse. Most parents of young children today touched their first computer as teens, and have no first-hand experience regarding the right age at which to begin training their own children in computer usage. But a parent can't help feeling a certain pride, watching a three-year-old navigate a game program.
We want our kids to have every advantage possible, and the computer is certainly the most comprehensive educational tool available, today. At the same time, we have to ask ourselves-how young is too young?.
Unfortunately, behavioral scientific studies take years to complets, and so far, there's no concensus among experts about the computer's effect on young children. However, many organizations do provide some common-sense guidelines for parents.
According to KitSource, many researchers discourage computer use before the age of three: "Computers simply do not match their learning style". Children under three learn about the world through their senses-taste, touch, sight and sound-and it's difficult for them to focus attention for any length of time. There are game programs available for kids as young as two, which concentrate on cause-and-effect actions: when the mouse is moved and clicked at a certain point, a noise occurs or a picture appears. However, a child slapping the bathwater, to make a noise and a splash, can be just as developmentally valuable, if not more so, because it involves more of a complets sensory experience.
Most experts agree that, by the age of three or four, kids are ready to begin exploring the computer, as long as they are supervised by parents or caregivers. According to SesameWorkshop.org, the ability to cntrol technology can be a valuable lesson at this age. As well, computer games for preschoolers can offer valuable lessons in counting, spelling, and classification.
What parents must guard against is using the computer as the only surrogate teacher, Some seminal studies have shown that a fairly sizable percentage of today's high-school students, who grew up dependent on computers, feel uncomfortable with the "mechanics" of arithmetic (two things puls two thing actualy make four things) and spelling (without spell-check)/
Parents must also weigh the physical effects of computer use. Obviously, the child accustomed to achieving entertainment and amusement solely through the computer is less active than the child who can derive pleasure from physical activity. If a child's computer experience isn't monitored for correct ergonomics, poor posture can develop, early, and be difficult to correct, later.
Eyestraing is also an important consideration about which parents must be vigilant. Twenty minutes to a half-hour in front of a computer monitor is probably as much time as children should spend, without a bresk.
And, of course, internet usage should be closely monitored by parents at all times.
Computers will continue to advance, even in ways we still haven't begun to fathom. With careful training, at an early age, our children can live lives enhanced by computers, rether than dominated by them.

2. Pull the CPU socket Lever sideways away from the socket and then upwards to 90 degree. Insert the CPU with the correct orientation. Do not use extra force to insert CPU, it only fits in one orientation. Close down the socket lever while holding down the CPU.
3. Put the heatsink faces down onto the CPU until it completely covers the CPU.
4. Put the Fan and Retention Mechanism Assembly onto the heatsink. Make sure all the four Retention Locks at each side of the Fan and Retention Mechanism Assembly snap into the Retention Holes.
5. Push down the Retention Lock at both sides ot the Fan and Retention Mechanism Assembly to lock up together with the Retention Module Base.
6. The Fanm and Retention Mechanism Assembly and Retention Module Base should now firmly lock up with cach other with the heatsink inside.
Note: Do not forget to set the correct bus frequency and multiple for your processor.

The backplane of the motherboard has the following I/O ports.
PS/2 Mouse : Use the upper PS/2 port to connect a PS/2 pointing device.

Inatalling Add-on Cards.
The slots in this motherboard are designed to hold expansion cards and connect them to the system bus. Expansion slots are a means of adding or enhancing the motherboard's features and capabilities by adding hardware which perfoms tasks that are not part of the basic system.
AGP Slot : The AGP slot used to install a graphics adapter that supports the AGP 4X specification and has a AGP 4X edge connector.
Note: The above layout is for reference only. The AGP slot may be different from your motherboard. Please refer to actual shipment.
PCI Slots: PCI slots are used to install expansion cards that have the 32-bit PCI interface.
CNR Slot: This slot is used to insert CNR with Modem and Audio functionality.
Note: Before installing an add-on card, check the documentaion for the card carefully. If the card
is not Plug and Play, you may have to manually configure the card before installation.
Example: Instructions to install an add-on card:
1. Remove a blanking plate from the system case corresponding to the slot you are going to use.
2. Install the edge connector of the add-on card into teh expansion slot. Ensure that the edge connetor is correctly seated in the slot.
3. Secure the metal bracket of the card to the system case with a screw.
Note: For some add-on cards, for example graphics adapters and network adapters, you have to install drivers and software before you can begin using the add-on card.

Installing a Hard Disk Drive.
1. Inatall teh hard disk drive in the drive cage in your system case.

Note: Ribbon cable connectors are usually keyed so that can only be installed corrector. When you first start up uour system, the BIOS should automatically detect your hard disk drive. If it doesn't, enter the Setup Utility and use the IDE Hard Disk Auto Detect featect to configure the hare disk drive that you have installed. See IDE HDD Auto-Detection.
Installing a CD-ROM/DVD Drive.
1. Installing CD-ROM/DVD drive into the drive cage in your system case.
2. Plug the IDE cable into IDE1. If you have already installed an HDD, use the other connector on the IDE cable.

Installing a Floppy Disketter Drive.
The motherboard has a floppy diskette drive(FDD) interface and ships with a diskette drive ribbon cable that supports one or two floppy diskette drive. You can install a 5.25-inch drive and a 3.5-inch drive with various capacities. The floppy diskette drive cable has one type connector for a 5.2-inch drive and another type of connector for a 3.5-inch drive.
1. Inatall the FDD into the drive cage in your system case.
2. Plug the FDD cable into Floppy 1.
Note: Ribbon cable connectors are usually keyed so that they can only be installed correctly on the device connector. If the connector is not keyed, make sure that you match the pin-1 side of the cable connector with the pin-1 side of the device connector. Each connector has teh pin-1 side clearly marked. The pin-1 side of each ribbon cable is always marked with a colored stripe on the cable.
3. Plug the correct connector on the FDD cable for the 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch drive into the FDD connector.
4. Plug a power cable from the case power supply into the power connector on the FDD.

Installing Memory Modules.
This Motherboard accommodates 184-pin 2.5V unbuffered Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory modules. The memory chips must be standard or registered SDRAM (Synchronus Dynamic Random Access Memory). The memory bus runs at 166 MHz.
Note: SDRAM provides 800 MBps or 1 GBps. data transfer depending on whether the bus is 100
MHz or 133MHz. Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR SDRAM) doubles the rate to 1.6 GBps and 2.1 GBps. DDR SDRAM uses additional power and ground lines and requires 184-pin DIMM modules rather than the 168-pin DIMMs used by SDAM.
The motherboard accommodates two memory modules. You must install at least one module in any of the two slots. Each module can be installed with 32 MB to 1GB of memory, total memory capacity is 2GB.
Note: Do not remove any memory module from its antistatic packaging until you are ready to install it on the motherboard. Handle the modules only by their edges. Do not touch the components or metal parts. Always wear a grounding strap when you handle the modules.
Installation Procedure.
Refer to the following to instal teh memory modules.
1. This motherboard supports unbuffered DDR SDRAM only. Do not attempt to insert any other type of DDR SDRAM into the slots.
2. Push the on each side of the DIMM slot down.
3.Align the memory module with the slot. The DIMM slots are keyed with notches and the DIMMs are keyed with cutouts so that they can only be installed correcily.
4. Check that the cutouts on the DIMM module edge connector match the notches in the DIMM
slot.
5. Install the DIMM module into the slot and press it firmly down until it seats correctly. The slot latches are levered upwards and latch on to the edges of the DIMM.
6. Install any remaining DIMM modules.

Caution: When installing a CPU heatsink and cooling fan make sure that you DO NOT scratch the motherboard or any of the surface-mount resisfors with the clip of the coolling fan. If the clip of the coolling fan scrapes across the motherboard, you may casue serious damage to the motherboare or its components.On most motherboards, there are small surface-mount resistors near the processor socket,which may be damaged if the cooling fan is carelessly installed.Avoid using cooling fans with sharp edges on the fan casing and the clips. Also, install teh cooling fan in a well-lit area so that you can clearly see the motherboard and processor socket.
Before installing the Processor
This motherboard automatically determines the CPU clock frequency and system bus frequency for the processor. You may be able to change these setting by making changes to jumpers on the motherboard, or changing the setting in the system. Setup Utility ,We strongly recommed that you do not overclock processors or other components to run faster than their rated speed.
Warning: Overclocking components can adversely affect the rellabillty of the system and introduce errors into your system. Overclocking can permanently damage teh motherboard by generating excess heat in components that are run beyond the rated limits.
This motherboard has a Socket 478 processor socket. When choosing a processor, consider teh performance reqauirements of the system. Performance is based on the processor design, the c lock speed and system bus frequency of the processor, and the quantity of internal cache memory and external cache memory.

Front Panel Connector:
The front panel connector (PANEL 1) provides a standard set of switch and LED connectors commonly found on ATX or micro-ATX cases. Refer to the table below for information:
Hard Drive Activity LED.
Connecting pins1 and 3 to a front panel mounted LED provides visual indication that data is being read from or written to the hard drive. For the LED to function properly, an IDE drive should be connected to the onboard IDE interface. The LED will show activity for devices connected to SCSI (hard drive activity LED) connector.
Power / Sleep/Message Waiting LED.
Connecting pins 2 and 4 to a single-or dual-color, front panel mounted LED provides power on/off, sleep, and message waiting indication.
Reset Switch.
Supporting the function requires connecting pins 5 and 7 to a momen-tary-contact switch that is normally open. When the switch is closed, the board resets and runs POST.
Power Switch.
Supporting the power on/off function requires connmecting pins 6 and 8 to a momentary- contact switch that is normally open. The switch should maintain contact for at least 50 ms to signal the power supply to switch on or off. The time reguirement is due to internal debounce circuitry. After receiving a power on/off signal, at least two seconds elapses before the power supply recognizes another on/off signal.

There are many types of computer cases on the marke. The motherboard complies with the
specifications for the Micro ATX system case. Some features on the motherboard are implemented by cablin connectors on the motherboard to indicators and switches on the system case. Parallel Port Mode:
Enables you to set the data tr4ansfer protocol for your parallel port. There are four options: SPP(Standard Parallel Port), EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port), ECP(Extended Capabilities Port) and ECP+EPP.
SPP allows data output only. Extended Capabilities Port(ECP) and Enhanced Parallel Port(EPP) are bi0-directional modes, allowing bothe data input and output. ECP and EPP modes are only supported with EPP- and ECP - aware peripherals.
ECP Mode Use DMA:
When the onboard parallel port is set to ECP mode, the parallel port can use DMA 3 or DMA 1.

DRAM Timing Control:
Click (Enter) key to enter its submenu:
Memory Timing:
Enbles you to select the CAS latency time in HCLKs of 2, 2.5, or 3. The value is set at teh factory depending on teh DRAM installed. Do not change teh values in this field unless you change specifications of the installed DRAM or the installed CPU.
** CAS Latency Time
This item controls the timing delay (in clock cycles) before the DRAM starts a read command after receiving it.
** RAS Active Timw
This item allows you to set the amount of time a RAS can be kept open for multiple accesses. High
figures will improve performance.
** RAS Precharge Time
This is the duration of the time interval during which the Row Address Strobe signal to a DRAM is held low during normal Read Write Cycles. This is the minimum interval between completing on read or write and starting another from the same ( non-page mode) DRAM. Techniques such as memory interleaving, or use of Page Mode DRAM are often used to avoid this delay. Some chipsets require this parameter in order to set up the memor configuration properly. The RAS Precharge vqalue is typically about the same as the RAM Access ( data read/write) time.
**RAS to CAS Delay
This is the amout of time a CAS is performed after a RAS. The lower teh better, but some DRAM does not support low figures.

AGP Aperture Size:
This setting controls just how much system RAM can be allocated to AGP for video purposes. The aperture is a portion of the PCI memory address range dedicated to graphics memory address space. Host cycles that hit the aperture range are forwarded to the AGP without any translation.

This item determines whether the graphic window base address in valid or not.
AGP Fast Write Support:
This item enables and disables AGP Fast Write Support.

CPU Feature:
This item is used to manage the thermal issue for certain CPU.
Hard Disk Boot Priority:
Use this option to select the hard disk boot priority.
CPU L3 Cashe:
This item is used to enable the L3 cache (default setting) and appears only for certain CPU (Intel Pentium 4 processor with HT Technology Extreme Edition) that possesses L3 cache.
Hyper-Threading Technology
This item is used to enable the functionality of the processor with Hyper-Threading Technology and will appear only when using such processor. The Hyper-Threading Technology helps your PC work more efficiently by maximizing processor resources and enabling a single processor to run two separate threads of software simultaneously, bringing forth greater performance and system responsiveness when running multiple applications at once.
First Boot Device/Second Boot Device /Third Boot Device /Boot Other Device:
Select the drive to boot first, second and third in the (First Boot Device), (Second Boot Device), and (Third Boot Device) items respectively. The BIOS will boot the operating system according to the sequence of the drive selected. Set (Boot Other Device) to (Enabled) if you with to boot from another device other than these three items.
Swap Floopy Drive:
When set to (Enabled), and the system is booting from the floppy drive, the system will boot from drive B instead of the regular drive A. There must be two floppy drives connected in the system to use this function.
Boot Up Floppy Seek:
When set to (Enabled), the BIOS will check whether the floppy disk drive is installed or not.
Boot Up NumLock Status:
This item determines the default state of the numeric keypad at system booting up.
(On): The numeric keypad functions as number keys.
(Off): The numeric keypad functions as arrow keys.
Seeurity Option :
This item determines when the system will promopt for password - every time the system boots or only when enters the BIOS setup.
(Setup): The password is required only when accessing the BIOS Setup.
(System): The password is required each time the computer boots up.
MPS Version Ctrl For OS:
This item specifies which version of MPS (Multi-Processor Specification) this motherboard will use. Leave this item to its default setting.
OS Select For DRAM-64MB:
This item allows you to access the memory that is over 64 MB in OS/2. Leave this item to its default (Non-OS2) setting for operating system other than OS/2.
Disable Unused PCI Clock:
This option disables the clock of PCI slot that is not in use.
(Yes): The system automatically detect the unused DIMM and PCI slots, and stop sending clock signal to these unused PCI slots.
(No): The system always send clock sinnal to all PCI slots.

About the Setup Utility
The computer Uses the latest Award BIOS with support for Windows Plug and Play. The CMOS
chip on the motherboard contains the ROM setup instructions for configuring the motherboard BISO.
The BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) Setup Utility displays the system's configuration status and provides you with options to set system parameters. The parameters are stored in battery -backed-up CMOS RAM that saves this information when the power is turned off. When the system is turned back on. the system is configured with the values you stored in CMOS.
The BIOS Setup Utility enables you to configure:
* Hard drives, diskette drivers, and peripherals
* Video display type and display options
* Password protertion from unauthorized use
* Power management features
The setting make in the Setup Utility affect how the computer performs. Before using the Setup
Utility , ensure that you understand the Setup Utility options.
This chapter provides explanations for Setup Utility options.
The Standard Configuration
A standard configuration has already been set in the Setup Utility. However, we recommend thjat you read this chapter in case you need to make any changes in the future.
This Setup Utility should be used:
* when changing the system configuration
* when a configuration error is detected and you are prompted to make changes to the Setup Utility
* when trying to resolve IRQ conficts
* when making changes to the Power Management configuration
* when changing the password or making other changes to the Security Setup
Updating the BIOS
You can download and install updated BIOS for this motherboard from the manufacturer's Web site. New BIOS provides support for new peripherals, improvements in performance, or fixes for known bugs. Install new BIOS as follows:
1. If your motherboard has a BIOS protection jumper, change the setting to allow BIOS flashing.
2.If your motherboard has an item called FIMware Write Protect in Advanced BIOS features, disable it. (Fimware Write Protect prevents BIOS from being ovewritten.)
3. Create a bootable system disk. (Refer to Windows online help for information on creating a bootable system disk.)
4. Download the Flash Utility and new BIOS file from the manufacture's Web site . Copy these files to the system diskette you created in Step3.
5. Turn off your computer and insert the system diskette in your computer's diskette drive. (You might need to run the Setup Utility and change the boot priority items on the Advanced BIOS Features Setup page, to forec your computer to boot from the floppy diskette drive first.)
6.At the A:\ prompt, type the Flash Utility program name and press
7. Type the filename of the new BIOS in the "File Name to Program" text box. Follow the onscreen directions to upadte the motherboard BIOS.
8. When the installation is complete, remove the floppy diskette from the diskette drive and restart your computer. If you motherboard has a Flash BIOS jumper, reset the jumper to protect the newly installed BIOS from being ovverwritten.
Troubleshooting
Q: & A:
Q:Do I need to Clear the CMOS before I use a new motherboard to assemble my new computer
system?
A: Yes, we highly recommend that you clear the CMOS before installing a new motherboard. Please move the CMOS jumper from its default 1-2 position to 2-3 for a few seconds, and then back. When you boot up your system for the first time, follow the instructions in the user's manual to load the optimized defaults.
Q: If my systems hang when I update the BIOS or the wrong CPU parameters, what should I do?
A: Whenever you update the BIOS or if the system hangs due to wrong CPU parameters setting, always clear CMOS jumper before booting up again.
Q: Why the system fails to boot up again right after a mechanical power-off?
A: Please keep a 30-second interval between each mechanical power On/Off.
Q: Why the system failed to boot up and nothing was displayed on teh screen after I did some over-clocking or non-setting inside the BIOS ? Is the mother board dead? Do I need to return if to where I bought from or go through an RMA process?
A: It should not cause hardware or permanent daqmage to motherboard when BIOS setting were changed from default to over-clocking or non-standard status.
We suggest the following three troubleshooting methods to discharge CMOS data, recover the hardware default status, and them make the motherboard working again. No need to bother returngin the motherboard to where you bought from or go through an RMA process.
Step 1. Switch off tht power supply unit the switch it on again after one minute. If there is no power switch on the power supply unit, disconnect its power cord for one minute then connect it back.
Press and hold the <> key on the keyboard, press the power-on button to boot up system. If it works, loose the key (Insert) key and hit (Del) key to enter the BIOS setup page to do the correct setting.
If the situation remains the same, repeat the procedures in Step 1 for three times , or try Step 2.
Step 2. Switch off the power supply unit or disconnect the power cord. Open the chassis cover. Locate the CCMOS jumper near the button battery. Chantge the jumper position from default 1-2 to 2-3 for one minute to discharge the CMOS data, and then put it back to default 1-2 position.
Close the chassis and switch on the power supply unit or plug in the power cord. Press the power-on button to boot up system. If it works. hit (Del) key to enter the BIOS setup page to
do the correct settings.
Step 3. The same procedure as Step 2, but in the meantime of discharging the CMOS data, pull out ATX power connectors from motherboard and remove the button battery during CMOS discharging.
Q: How can I get a quick response to my request for technical support?
A: Bu sure follow the guidelines as stated in the " Technical Support Form" section of this manual.
If you have a problem during operation, in order to help our technical support personnel quickly determine the problem with your motnerboard and give you the answers you need, before filling in teh technical support form, eliminate and peripheral that is not related to the problem, and indicate it on the form. Fax this to your dealer or to the company where you bought the hardware in order to benefit from our technical support.
