But a parent can't help feeling a certain pride, watching a three-year-old navigate a game program.
We want our kids to have every advantage possible, and the computer is certainly the most comprehensive educational tool available, today. At the same time, we have to ask ourselves-how young is too young?.
Unfortunately, behavioral scientific studies take years to complets, and so far, there's no concensus among experts about the computer's effect on young children. However, many organizations do provide some common-sense guidelines for parents.
According to KitSource, many researchers discourage computer use before the age of three: "Computers simply do not match their learning style". Children under three learn about the world through their senses-taste, touch, sight and sound-and it's difficult for them to focus attention for any length of time. There are game programs available for kids as young as two, which concentrate on cause-and-effect actions: when the mouse is moved and clicked at a certain point, a noise occurs or a picture appears. However, a child slapping the bathwater, to make a noise and a splash, can be just as developmentally valuable, if not more so, because it involves more of a complets sensory experience.
Most experts agree that, by the age of three or four, kids are ready to begin exploring the computer, as long as they are supervised by parents or caregivers. Eyestraing is also an important consideration about which parents must be vigilant. Twenty minutes to a half-hour in front of a computer monitor is probably as much time as children should spend, without a bresk.
And, of course, internet usage should be closely monitored by parents at all times.
Computers will continue to advance, even in ways we still haven't begun to fathom. With careful training, at an early age, our children can live lives enhanced by computers, rether than dominated by them.

This motherboard provides a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) Socket 478 to install CPU.
The CUP you bought should have a kit of heatsink and cooling fan along with. If that's not the ease, buy on specially designed for CPU Socket 478.
1. Locate the 478-pin ZIF socket on the motherboard. Fasten the Retention Module Base onto the motherboard.
Attertion: If you are using chassis specially designed for CPU 478, please pay attention to the location of metal studs or spacers if they are already installed on the chassis, Be careful not let the metal studs or spacers contact the printed circuit wire or parts on the PCB.
2. Pull the CPU socket Lever sideways away from the socket and then upwards to 90 degree. Insert the CPU with the correct orientation. Do not use extra force to insert CPU, it only fits in one orientation. Close down the socket lever while holding down the CPU.
3. Put the heatsink faces down onto the CPU until it completely covers the CPU.
4. Put the Fan and Retention Mechanism Assembly onto the heatsink. Make sure all the four Retention Locks at each side of the Fan and Retention Mechanism Assembly snap into the Retention Holes.
5. Push down the Retention Lock at both sides ot the Fan and Retention Mechanism Assembly to lock up together with the Retention Module Base.
6. The Fanm and Retention Mechanism Assembly and Retention Module Base should now firmly lock up with cach other with the heatsink inside.
Note: Do not forget to set the correct bus frequency and multiple for your processor.

CNR Slot: This slot is used to insert CNR with Modem and Audio functionality.
Note: Before installing an add-on card, check the documentaion for the card carefully. If the card
is not Plug and Play, you may have to manually configure the card before installation.
Example: Instructions to install an add-on card:
1. Remove a blanking plate from the system case corresponding to the slot you are going to use.
2. Install the edge connector of the add-on card into teh expansion slot. Ensure that the edge connetor is correctly seated in the slot.
3. Secure the metal bracket of the card to the system case with a screw.
Note: For some add-on cards, for example graphics adapters and network adapters, you have to install drivers and software before you can begin using the add-on card.

If the connector is not keyed, make sure that you match the pin-1 side of the cable connector with the pin-1 side of thedevice connector. Each connector has the pin-1 side clearly marked. The pin-1 side of each ribbon cable is always marked with a colorde stripe on the cable.
3. Plug an IDE Cable connector into the hard disk drive IDE connector. It doesn't matter which connector on the cable you use.
4. Plug a power cable from the case power supply into the power connector on the hard disk drive.
When you first start up uour system, the BIOS should automatically detect your hard disk drive. If it doesn't, enter the Setup Utility and use the IDE Hard Disk Auto Detect featect to configure the hare disk drive that you have installed. See IDE HDD Auto-Detection.
Installing a CD-ROM/DVD Drive.
1. Installing CD-ROM/DVD drive into the drive cage in your system case.
2. Plug the IDE cable into IDE1. If you have already installed an HDD, use the other connector on the IDE cable.

If the connector is not keyed, make sure that you match the pin-1 side of the cable connector with the pin-1 side of the device connector. Each connector has the pin-1 side clearly marked. The floppy diskette drive cable has one type connector for a 5.2-inch drive and another type of connector for a 3.5-inch drive.

2. Plug the FDD cable into Floppy 1.
Note: Ribbon cable connectors are usually keyed so that they can only be installed correctly on the device connector. If the connector is not keyed, make sure that you match the pin-1 side of the cable connector with the pin-1 side of the device connector. Each connector has teh pin-1 side clearly marked. This Motherboard accommodates 184-pin 2.5V unbuffered Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory modules. The memory chips must be standard or registered SDRAM (Synchronus Dynamic Random Access Memory). The memory bus runs at 166 MHz.
Note: SDRAM provides 800 MBps or 1 GBps. data transfer depending on whether the bus is 100
MHz or 133MHz. Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR SDRAM) doubles the rate to 1.6 GBps and 2.1 GBps. DDR SDRAM uses additional power and ground lines and requires 184-pin DIMM modules rather than the 168-pin DIMMs used by SDAM.
The motherboard accommodates two memory modules. You must install at least one module in any of the two slots. Each module can be installed with 32 MB to 1GB of memory, total memory capacity is 2GB.
Note: Do not remove any memory module from its antistatic packaging until you are ready to install it on the motherboard. Handle the modules only by their edges. Do not touch the components or metal parts. Always wear a grounding strap when you handle the modules.
Installation Procedure.
Refer to the following to instal teh memory modules.
1. This motherboard supports unbuffered DDR SDRAM only. Do not attempt to insert any other type of DDR SDRAM into the slots.
2. Push the on each side of the DIMM slot down.
3.Align the memory module with the slot. The DIMM slots are keyed with notches and the DIMMs are keyed with cutouts so that they can only be installed correcily.
4. Check that the cutouts on the DIMM module edge connector match the notches in the DIMM
slot.
5. Install the DIMM module into the slot and press it firmly down until it seats correctly. The slot latches are levered upwards and latch on to the edges of the DIMM.
6. Install any remaining DIMM modules.

Caution: When installing a CPU heatsink and cooling fan make sure that you DO NOT scratch the motherboard or any of the surface-mount resisfors with the clip of the coolling fan. If the clip of the coolling fan scrapes across the motherboard, you may casue serious damage to the motherboare or its components.On most motherboards, there are small surface-mount resistors near the processor socket,which may be damaged if the cooling fan is carelessly installed.Avoid using cooling fans with sharp edges on the fan casing and the clips. Also, install teh cooling fan in a well-lit area so that you can clearly see the motherboard and processor socket.
Before installing the Processor
This motherboard automatically determines the CPU clock frequency and system bus frequency for the processor. You may be able to change these setting by making changes to jumpers on the motherboard, or changing the setting in the system. Setup Utility ,We strongly recommed that you do not overclock processors or other components to run faster than their rated speed.
Warning: Overclocking components can adversely affect the rellabillty of the system and introduce errors into your system. Overclocking can permanently damage teh motherboard by generating excess heat in components that are run beyond the rated limits.
This motherboard has a Socket 478 processor socket. When choosing a processor, consider teh performance reqauirements of the system. Performance is based on the processor design, the c lock speed and system bus frequency of the processor, and the quantity of internal cache memory and external cache memory.

Front Panel Connector

Front Panel Connector:
The front panel connector (PANEL 1) provides a standard set of switch and LED connectors commonly found on ATX or micro-ATX cases. Refer to the table below for information:
Hard Drive Activity LED.
Connecting pins1 and 3 to a front panel mounted LED provides visual indication that data is being read from or written to the hard drive. For the LED to function properly, an IDE drive should be connected to the onboard IDE interface. The LED will show activity for devices connected to SCSI (hard drive activity LED) connector.
Power / Sleep/Message Waiting LED.
Connecting pins 2 and 4 to a single-or dual-color, front panel mounted LED provides power on/off, sleep, and message waiting indication.
Reset Switch.
Supporting the function requires connecting pins 5 and 7 to a momen-tary-contact switch that is normally open. When the switch is closed, the board resets and runs POST.
Power Switch.
Supporting the power on/off function requires connmecting pins 6 and 8 to a momentary- contact switch that is normally open. The switch should maintain contact for at least 50 ms to signal the power supply to switch on or off. The time reguirement is due to internal debounce circuitry. After receiving a power on/off signal, at least two seconds elapses before the power supply recognizes another on/off signal.

1. Connect the CPU cooling fan cable to CPUFAN 1.
2. Connect the case cooling fan connector to CASFAN 1.
3. Connect the case speaker cable to SPEAKER 1.
4. Connect the case seitches and indicator to PANEL 1.
5. Connect the case LED cable to SJ 1.
6. Connect the Petium 4 processor auxiliary case power supply case power supply connector to ATX 1.
7. Connect the standard power supply connector to ATX 2.

Setting Jumpers.
Use the motherboard jumpers to set system configuration options. Jumpers with more than one pin are numbered. When setting the jumpers, ensure that the jumper caps are placed on the corred pins.
The illustralions below show a 2-pin jumper. When the jumper cap is placed on both pins, the jumper is SHORT. If you remove the jumper cap, or place the jumper cap on just one pin, the jumper is OPEN.

Safety Precautions
Follow these safety precautions when installing the motherboard:
*Wear a grounding strap attached to a grounded device to avoid damage from static electricity.
*Discharge static electricity by touching the metal case of a safely grounded object before working on the montherboard.
*Leave components in the static-proof bags they came in.
*Hold all circuit boards by the edges. Do not bend circuit boards.

Note: Do not overtighten the screws as this can stress the motherboard.
Most system cases have mounting brackets installed in the case, which correspond to the holes in the motherboard. Place the motherboard over the mounting brackets and secure the motherboard onto the mounting brackets with screws.
Ensure that your case has an I/O template that supports the I/O ports and expansion slots on your motherboard.

Choosing a Computer Case
There are many types of computer cases on the marke. The motherboard complies with the
specifications for the Micro ATX system case. Some features on the motherboard are implemented by cablin connectors on the motherboard to indicators and switches on the system case. Ensure that your case supoorts all the features required. The motherboard can support one or two floppy diskette drives and four enhanced IDE drives. Ensure that your case has sufficient power and space for all the drives that you intend to install.
Most cases have a choice of I/O templates in the rear panel. Make sure that the I/O template in the case matches the I/O installed on the rear edge of the motherboard.
The motherboard has a Micro ATX form factor of 244 x 220 mm. Choose a case that accommodates this form factor.
